Beyond the Basics: Advanced Procedures at Vet’s Klinic

by | Feb 28, 2025

SurgeryAt Vet’s Klinic, we’re committed to providing the highest quality care for your beloved pets. We understand that sometimes pets require more than routine vet care, usually requiring a referral. But we prefer to offer more options to all pets that are in need of these procedures.

That’s why we offer a range of advanced surgical and medical options, performed by our experienced and compassionate team. This will shed light on some of these advanced procedures, giving you a better understanding of what they entail.

Orthopedic Procedures:

  • Simple Fracture Repair: When a bone breaks cleanly, we can often repair it with pins, screws, and plates to stabilize the fracture and allow it to heal correctly. This procedure aims to restore proper alignment and function.

  • Complex Fracture Repair: More complicated fractures, such as those involving multiple breaks or shattered bone, require a more technical approach. Our team has expertise in managing these complex cases.

  • Medial Patellar Luxation: This condition occurs when the kneecap (patella) dislocates from its normal groove, causing pain and lameness. Surgical correction involves realigning the insertion of the patella tendon, and in some cases, deepening the groove to prevent further luxation.

  • TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy): A TPLO is a common and highly effective surgery for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears in dogs. It changes the biomechanics of the knee, stabilizing it and allowing for improved function.

  • Arthrodesis: This procedure involves fusing a joint to eliminate pain and instability. It’s considered when other treatments haven’t been successful or when the joint is severely damaged.

Airway and Soft Tissue Procedures:

  • Laryngeal Tie Back: This surgery is performed to treat laryngeal paralysis, a condition where the cartilage in the larynx fails to open properly, obstructing airflow. The procedure involves surgically tying back the affected cartilage to improve breathing.

  • BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) Surgery: Brachycephalic breeds (like pugs and bulldogs) often suffer from BOAS due to their facial structure. Surgery may involve widening the nostrils, shortening the soft palate, and/or removing everted laryngeal saccules to improve airflow.

  • Salivary Gland Removal: Sometimes, salivary glands can become diseased or blocked, requiring surgical removal. This procedure can alleviate pain and swelling.

Other Specialised Procedures:

  • TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy): TECA is a surgery performed to treat chronic ear infections or tumors that are unresponsive to medical management. It involves removing the entire ear canal.

  • Keyhole Spay (Laparoscopic Ovariectomy/Ovariohysterectomy): This minimally invasive procedure uses small incisions and a camera to remove the ovaries (ovariectomy) or ovaries and uterus (ovariohysterectomy). It offers benefits like reduced pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars compared to traditional spays.

  • Extra Hepatic Shunt: This is a complex surgery to correct a portosystemic shunt, an abnormal blood vessel that bypasses the liver. Correcting this shunt will improve liver function and overall health.
